Dinkel's Delights

Located o­n Chicago's north side lies an Atkins’ nightmare and a carb-lovers dream.  A small, family owned pastry shop, Dinkel's Bakery is a neighborhood delight.  Dinkel's reputation is freshly baked, delectable bakeries, and with their special of the day, featuring a different baked good each day, o­ne is tempted into purchasing every pastry offered, from their large, fluffy doughnuts, to their chocolate brownies, which are so chocolaty, you feel like it's more of a meal than a snack. 

Early in the morning, before the shop opens, you smell the fresh bread, doughnuts, and cakes baking.  Passing the storefront and peering through the glass, you see the bustling bakers, hurriedly completing their pre-opening bake ritual.  Already, cars pull up in the parking spaces outside the store, and anxious faces peer from car windows, hungrily staring at the door, waiting for the "OPEN" sign to appear, signaling the start of not o­nly the opening of the bakery, but the start of their own work day.  At 6:00 AM sharp, a worker slips the "OPEN" sign o­n the door, and immediately, a small throng of the faithful flock into the store, eager to receive the newly baked, fresh pastries.  Step aside quickly if you are not there to buy- you might get knocked down in the rush to the counter!

Among Dinkel's specialties are freshly made cakes for every occasion, from birthdays to weddings.  Order in advance and pick your toppings, or walk in and receive a ready make cake.  Or walk in and pick out some cupcakes with thickly spread icing o­n the top.  If you like, you can also order a soft doughnut or croissant and a coffee o­n your way to the Paulina train stop o­n the Brown line.  A myriad of pastry options are available for whatever need or craving you have- but be careful!  The popularity of this bakery is large, and especially with the specials of the day, pastries can disappear quickly.  Usually by mid-afternoon, the majority of the pastries are gone, leaving the less popular pastries behind- still good, but nothing compares to the first fresh pickings of the day.
